Children experience cancer differently from adults. How well they cope and respond to treatment is often highly dependent on how well their families are coping and supporting them throughout. In a sense, the entire family becomes our patient when a child receives treatment at Texas Children’s Cancer Center®. The family’s experiences, stories and voices are an important part of our story, and they are the only ones who can tell it.
This year, in honor of National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, we asked patient families if they would tell us their stories in their own words. We were overwhelmed by the response. More than 15 families representing a wide variety of patient ages, diagnoses and stages of the journey volunteered to share their experiences in intimate detail.
Each week we will feature a new patient family profile, adding a new chapter to help tell the complete story of what cancer is and what Texas Children’s Cancer Center is doing to defeat it.

T-Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia
When Holly received a call from her pediatrician late on a Friday night, she knew it probably wasn’t good news. But she was still unprepared to learn that her 4-year-old only child, Grey, had leukemia.
